The MINISTER OF COMMUNICATIONS, DR. IVY MATSEPE CASABURRI, WILL LAUNCH THE NATIONAL ELECTRONIC MEDIA INSTITUTE OF SOUTH AFRICA (NEMISA) ON FRIDAY, 26 OCTOBER 2001

The National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa, a government funded training institute specialising on broadcasting, new media and multimedia skills, is to be officially launched by the Hon. Minister of Communications, Dr. Ivy Matsepe Casaburri, on Friday, the 26th of October 2001.

Billed as the single most important event of the year for the ever-growing institute, the occasion is aimed at showcasing South Africa's capacity for skills development in broadcasting and multimedia at the highest level. Within its short history (established in 1998), NEMISA has surpassed the expectations of many in positioning itself as a trendsetter in the multimedia-training environment of our country. It boasts some of the most sophisticated broadcasting equipment in the industry and has invested millions in setting up fully fledged broadcasting and production studios for both radio and television.

Since its establishment, NEMISA has directed its services at previously disadvantaged young people who have been denied access into the exciting world of Information and Communications Technology. The launch will also be used as a graduation ceremony for this first group of trainees who have obtained a professional diploma in radio/TV production studies.

Communication, particularly through the media, plays an important role in shaping the consciousness of every society and NEMISA believes that South Africa needs to provide the most advanced and sophisticated training for all people in this field. The world has become more and more inter connected and inter dependent, our survival in it as a nation, will depend on our capacity to participate at an equal footing in this technological revolution. The inclusion of the most disadvantaged of our people into this epoch of technological advancement, through capacity building, is NEMISA's chief mandate.

The official launch, also to be attended by dignitaries from the industry including the SABC, Multichoice, Telkom, Primedia, and others, is scheduled as follows:

Date: 26 October 2001
Venue: NEMISA, 21 Girton Rd, Parktown, Johannesburg
Time: 14h00 - 17h00

A press briefing for the media will be held on Thursday, the 25th of October at NEMISA at 11h00 am.

Contact: Mike Ramagoma at 083 6000 984.

Issued by: NEMISA, 23 October 2001
