MOSUNKUTU ANNOUNCES IMMINENT CLOSURE OF TAXI ROUTES, RANKS IN LENASIA AND THEMBELIHLE

Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works, Khabisi Mosunkutu, has announced the imminent closure of certain minibus taxi routes and ranks in the areas of Lenasia Extension 1 to Extension 10, Lenasia South and Thembelihle. "From 00h01 on Wednesday, 17 October 2001 until 00h00 on Friday, 19 October 2001, taxi routes and ranks will be closed to minibus taxi-type operations."

The three taxi ranks that will be closed are the following:

* Inner Circle Taxi Rank;
* Thembelihle Taxi Rank; and
* Love Day Street Taxi Rank.

The closure of routes and ranks will affect approximately 500 minibus taxis.

During this period, these taxis will report to the Department's base in Johannesburg to be tested for roadworthiness and to receive identification and registration stickers.

Mosunkutu's decision to close ranks and routes follows ongoing tension, disputes and conflict between the drivers and owners of the Lenasia United Taxi Association (LUTA), as well as the Lenasia South, Klerksdorp Taxi Association (LSKT). "Our main concern has and continues to be the safety of commuters and the stability of the taxi industry," MEC Mosunkutu emphasised.

Alternative transport has been arranged. "In light of the year-end examinations, which are underway, learner transport will be excluded," Mosunkutu said. He also called on commuters and employers in the areas for understanding and appreciation of any delays in transportation, which might be caused by the closure of routes and ranks
