FAMILY VIOLENCE, CHILD PROTECTION AND SEXUAL OFFENCES UNIT (FCS) OF THE SAPS RELEASES CONVICTION STATISTICS FOR 1 JANUARY 2001 TO 1 JUNE 2001
The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit of the South African Police Service, has released the following statistics in respect of conviction for the period 1 January 2001 to 1 June 2001.
CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN (UNDER 18)
Number of cases finalised in court: (convictions): 1 021
Years imprisonment: 7 284.5
Fines: R 234 120
Life terms of imprisonment: 53
Years correctional supervision: 23.5
Declared as President's patient: 7
Compensation to be paid R 18 000
CRIMES AGAINST ADULTS (18+)
Number of cases finalised in court (convictions): 179
Years imprisonment: 1 328
Fines: R 62 240
Life terms of imprisonment: 4
Years correctional supervision: 3
Declared as President's patient: 0
Compensation to be paid: 0
For the year 2000, only 64 life-terms were recorded for crimes against women and children. This compared to the first six months of 2001, is a huge improvement. This is an indication of the commitment and dedication of the respective investigating officers.
The FCS unit currently has 27919 case dockets on hand, which include 15112 case dockets where investigations have been completed and are at court awaiting trial. Presently FCS investigators has a workload of approximately 65 dockets on hand per person.
Crimes against women and children remains one of the key priorities of the South African Police Service and will continue to receive the appropriate attention.
