DEPUTY PRESIDENT JACOB ZUMA's RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS IN THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

QUESTIONS FOR ORAL REPLY

Mr MF Cassim (IFP) to ask the Deputy President:

QUESTION NO: 1

(1) Whether any particular sector of the Government is charged with the responsibility of monitoring job creation; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so, which sector?

(2) Whether any public barometer exists to allow interested parties to see what growth in this regard is being achieved on a month-by-month basis; if not, why not; if so, what are the further relevant details?

REPLY

1) I must stress at the outset that it is not government's main responsibility to create jobs! Ours, in the main, is to create the appropriate environment that would facilitate economic growth and increase investments (both domestic and foreign), which in turn would impact positively on sustainable job creation. This is one of the key collective tasks of government and in particular the economic Ministers and is monitored closely by the Cabinet and the Cabinet cluster on Investment and Employment.

2) Statistics South Africa, the official statistical organ of government, compiles and produces reports on the growth of employment or decline of unemployment. These reports are the Survey of Employment and Earnings for the Formal Sector, published quarterly and the Labour Force Survey, published every six months, which reports on both formal and informal employment.
