MEDIA STATEMENT: OFFICE OF THE PREMIER

The Premier, Mr Gerald Morkel, today called on the Archbishop of Cape Town, Archbishop Ndungane to convene an All Party Summit at which all political parties will be called on to sign a peace/tolerance pledge. The letter sent to Archbishop Ndungane's office this afternoon is attached.

Letter follows:

21 September 2001

Archbishop Ndungane
C/o StGeorge's Cathedral
Cape Town
8000

Dear Archbishop

I refer to a successful All Party Summit, convened by yourself, at which all political parties signed a peace/tolerance pledge on March 17, 1999. Unfortunately recent events demand a similar summit. Following the recent murder of a UDM member and the shooting of an ANC councillor, I called on political parties to call on their followers to remain calm. At the request of my MEC for Community Safety, MEC Hennie Bester, I called an urgent meeting of political leaders to address the issue of political intolerance. The ANC leadership declined to attend.

I now appeal to you to again call an All Party Summit at your earliest convenience, with you as convenor, at which all the parties can be requested to once again commit themselves in writing by signing a new peace/tolerance pledge.

I hope to hear from you soon with regard to this matter.

Kind regards

Gerald Morkel
Premier
