WESTERN CAPE GOVERNMENT FLIES FLAGS AT HALF-MAST
The South African flag is flying half-mast on the Western Cape Provincial Legislature as a sign of condolence with the American people. The Premier, Mr Gerald Morkel, says he gave a spontaneous instruction to fly the flag at half-mast as the catastrophe unfolded. "It is a gesture to the American people in their hour of need and this province joins them in their mourning."
Premier Morkel said he took the decision on the strength of the Western Cape's co-operation agreement ties with the American states of Florida en California. A spokesperson for Foreign Affairs confirmed this morning that South African embassies abroad are also flying their flags at half-mast.
