GOVERNMENT ON E-MAIL HOAX

The South African government has confirmed with CNN officials that there is no truth to an e-mail message being circulated; quoting "CNN News flash", that US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, hinted that South Africa might be implicated in the tragedy that has befallen the US.

The message is simply and utterly a hoax.

The South African government hopes that the media, both here and abroad, will handle this piece of psychological and financial terrorism with the contempt it deserves.

It should be expected that people with depraved minds might wish to take advantage of such developments to achieve their own wicked intentions.

Editors should note that the e-mail message refers to "CNN News flash 4255/11/09/200/23h15", long before any statements on the investigations had been issued by the US Government.

We also wish to indicate that our intelligence agencies have conferred with their US counterparts and confirmed that no such statement was made.
