THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION, PROFESSOR KADER ASMAL, IS TO HOLD THE COUNCIL OF EDUCATION MINISTERS' (CEM) MEETING AND TO SIGN A R100m AGREEMENT WITH JAPAN.
The Council of Education Ministers (CEM) and the Minister of Education Professor Kader Asmal MP, will discuss a number of issues during the CEM meeting on Monday, 10 September, in Cape Town.
The Council will discuss the following issues among others:
* African Renaissance School Project
* ELRC Matters (Post provisioning, etc)
* Language in Education Policy
* A single senior certificate for South Africa
Media is invited to a press briefing after the meeting at 15h30.
During the press briefing the Minister of Education, Professor Asmal, will also sign a R100 million Japanese Grant Aid School Building Agreement with the Japanese Ambassador, Mr J Enoki. The programme involves the building of school infrastructure. The amount is to be divided equally between Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
Agreements for the Eastern Cape (R50m) and KwaZulu-Natal (R50m) are the conclusion of a detailed planning done by the Japanese International Co-operation Agency in co-operation with the Department of Education, and the two provincial education departments.
