MINISTER OF PROVINCIAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT, MR FS MUFAMADI, SENDS A DELEGATION TO ASSESS FLOOD DAMAGE IN CAPE PENINSULA (WESTERN CAPE PROVINCE)
The Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Mr. Sidney Mufamadi, will send a national delegation to Cape Town today to assess the flood damage caused by the recent heavy rains in the city's surrounding areas.
This follows a meeting between Minister Mufamadi and the MEC for Local Government and Development in the Western Cape, Mr. P Uys. The national Director-General of the Department of Provincial and Local Government (DPLG), Mr Zam Titus, will head the team. Representatives from the national department of Land Affairs, Social Development and the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) will accompany Mr. Titus.
Minister Mufamadi says there is a need for all three (national, provincial and local) spheres of government to respond in a coordinated manner to deal effectively with the flooding. The inter-departmental team will arrive in Cape Town this afternoon to assess the situation and immediately report to Minister Mufamadi. They will also recommend the appropriate action to be taken.
A national team consisting of the Departments of Water Affairs, Health, Land Affairs, Housing, Social Development, Public Works, Provincial and Local Government, representatives of the SANDF, Police and Emergency services will be established immediately. The NDMC will coordinate this team.
