ANNOUNCEMENT BY WESTERN CAPE, MEC FOR SOCIAL SERVICES AND POVERTY RELIEF, MR DAVID MALATSI, ON THE INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS HIT BY DEVASTATING FLOODS

Earlier today, I issued a press statement, wherein I stated that I would take issue on the matter of the damage caused by the floods to our residents of informal settlements on the Cape Flats, with the National Minister of Social Development (Dr Zola Skweyiya). I met with him in Pretoria today, and I have persuaded him to come to Cape Town and see for himself the extent of the flood damage. I want to show him how the lives of our people in the informal settlements have been severely disrupted by the damage caused by the floods. I also want him to understand first hand that the Western Cape Department of Social Services and Poverty Relief is poised to fervently help our people, but this requires urgent funds, which we currently do not have.

I shall also accompany Minister Zola Skweyiya on a visit to two HIV/AIDS Centres, on the Cape Flats.

The programme for our combined tour of the flooded areas as well as the HIV/AIDS Centres tomorrow is as follows:

09:30 - 10:15
Tafelsig Rehabilitation Centre, (HIV/AIDS Support Centre)

10:40 - 11:30
Beautiful Gate Ministry, (Border of Crossroads and Nyanga)

12:00 - 12:45
Lusaka Informal Settlement, (Ward 39) Nyanga

13:30 - 14:30
Meeting with School Children, Ikwezi Community Centre Gugulethu,

15:00 - 16:00
Polla Park (Ward 34), Vuyiseka High School, Phillippi

Enquiries: Sam Dodgen at (021) 483 5457/082 821 9018

Issued by: Office of the MEC for Social Services and Poverty Relief, Western Cape, 23 August 2001
