WOMEN'S DAY CELEBRATION - 9 AUGUST 2001

Western Cape Sport and Recreation will be celebrating National Women's Day on 9 August with a calypso of sport and recreation related activities in Paarl and Philippi. Thandi Mhlana, a prominent community leader will deliver the keynote address at the Philippi event while the Director of Sport and Recreation, Advocate Rod Solomons and the Minister of Transport & Sport, Piet Meyer will attend the event in Paarl. Similar events will also be staged in George, Mossel Bay, Zoar, De Rust and Calitzdorp. A number of our female sports personalities like Desiree Ellis (former captain of Banyana - Banyana), Anne Siroky and Irma G from Radio Good Hope will be attending these events.

The celebrations are in line with the Directorate's strategy to focus on the marginalised sector of our communities and to create a high profile around their activities. Various events including, morabaraba, marimba bands, women's choir, women's boxing, netball, 5 a side football, women's rugby, handball and indigenous games, will characterise the celebrations. A seminar on the importance of women in sport will also be held at The Fancourt Hotel in George.

The community, especially girls and women are invited to attend in their droves to make a success of the day. A special walkathon will be staged through the streets of Paarl and Philippi to demonstrate that women are active sports people and not just spectators in sport.

Advocate Rod Solomons, the Director of Sport & Recreation, said that with these activities, Western Cape Sport & Recreation is once again showing it's commitment to women's development through Sport & Recreation.
