Following its lekgotla earlier this week, Cabinet held a brief ordinary meeting on Wednesday evening (25 July 2001).

The meeting adopted a plan for the re-organisation of technical colleges to respond to the human resource needs of the country. This will include the merger of a number of these colleges into Further Education Training (FET) Colleges under the relevant Act. However, no sites of teaching and learning will be closed in this process.

Cabinet approved the implementation of a new multi-application smart identity card on the basis of revised objectives of the Home Affairs National Identification System (HANIS). The new card system, which will be phased in over a period of five years, will also serve as a basis for integration of relevant government services as well as for possible utilisation in the existing banking infrastructure.

Cabinet approved the Bill on the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities for submission to Parliament.

The following appointments were approved:

* Ngwedzeni Calvin Sengani as Provincial Commissioner in the Northern Province;
* HL Kgomongwe as CEO of the Road Accident Fund;
* Additional part-time members and one full-time member to the Board on Tariffs and Trade and extension of the term of office of existing Board members;
* Two Deputy Directors-General in the Department of Transport;
* Chief Financial Officer and Head of Corporate Services in the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology;
* Gladwin Marumo as Chief Operating Officer and Michiel Naude as Chief Financial Officer of Sentech.
