WESTERN CAPE PREMIER, GERALD MORKEL, CONDEMNS DISRUPTION OF THE CERES MEETING ON 26 JULY 2001
Attempts by a handful of people from Worcester to disrupt a public meeting of the Western Cape Provincial Cabinet at Ceres last night (26 July 2001), was strongly condemned by the Premier, Gerald Morkel, in a statement this morning.
The Premier and his Cabinet were on a two-day visit to the Witzenberg area where several successful meetings were held. The meeting in the town hall of Ceres, which was scheduled to start at 18:30 was delayed by 40 minutes by a small group of whistle-blowing, screaming people led by Nizam Ismail, brother of Anwar Ismail, a DA provincial member of parliament who has just been subjected to a disciplinary party hearing. Judgement will be passed tomorrow (28 July 2001).
Mr Morkel said the shameless behaviour exhibited at the meeting had greatly disturbed him and was totally unacceptable. As DA Leader of the Western Cape, he has laid a police complaint of public disturbance against Nizam Ismail and his cronies.
After the police removed the disrupters, the meeting continued undisturbed. Mr Morkel thanked the residents of Ceres for their patience and apologised for the abhorrent behaviour that they had to endure.
