LAUNCH OF MAJOR RURAL ROAD PROJECTS BY NDEBELE: SOD TURNING CEREMONY - AFRICAN RENAISSANCE ROADS PROGRAMME

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Mr S'bu Ndebele will conduct sod-turning ceremonies in the following areas as part of the African Renaissance Special Roads Upgrading Programme that was launched on 8th May 2001 at the Department's Annual Summit:

Monday, 25th June 2001 at 10H00 at Hlabisa Town Hall for Main Roads 235, 52 and 49 extending from Mtubatuba to Vryheid via Nongoma and from Nongoma to Pongola (105,3 kilometres at a cost of R136, 8 million)

Tuesday, 26th June 2001 at 10H00 at Ingwavuma Town Hall for Main Road 443 extending from Bhambanana to Ingwavuma (22,3 kilometres at a cost of R6, 1 million)

The purpose of the African Renaissance Roads Programme is to build a truly representative road network and road construction industry in KZN.

This programme involves major routes that serve communities that are hopelessly under-provided for but which have a real development potential, particularly for market agriculture and tourism.

A total of 348 kilometres of road will be surfaced in the province at a cost of R452,3 million. These roads include:

* Kranskop to Nkandla and Eshowe via Ndondodwane bridge (89,2 kilometres at a cost of R115, 9 million);

* Verulam to Inanda via Ndwedwe (41,5 kilometres at a cost of R53, 9 million);

* Highflats to Umtentweni via Dweshula and St. Faiths (51,2 kilometres at a cost of R66, 6 million);

* Edendale to Taylors Halt via Nxamalala (12,2 kilometres at a cost of R15, 9 million); and

* Osizweni to Buffalo Flats (48,6 kilometres at a cost of R63, 2 million).
