SAHRC TO HOLD EASTERN CAPE SUMMIT ON RACISM - 7 JUNE 2001
The Easter Cape Provincial office of the SA Human Rights Commission, the Eastern Cape NGO Coalition and the Youth Commission will be holding a Provincial Summit on Racism. This summit will take place in the City Hall, East London on Thursday, 7 June 2001. The objectives of the summit are to:
* Report to the people of the Eastern Cape on the outcomes of the National Conference on Racism held in Sandton, Johannesburg during September-October last year;
* To solicit support in preparation for the World Conference against Racism including an update as far as preparations are concerned; and
* To work towards a formation of a Provincial Forum Against Racism that will help to implement the National Action Plan and Strategy to Combat Racism.
The National Conference on Racism adopted the Millennium Statement, which contains in itself the National Action Plan and Strategy to Combat Racism (NAPSCR). The consultative meeting will also seek strategies to publicise the Millennium Statement to the people of the Eastern Cape Province. It will also recall that parliament has declared the period 2001 - 2010 as a National Decade for Mobilisation against Racism.
Government at all levels; labour, business, traditional leaders, churches, and political organisations, amongst others have been invited to participate at this significant Summit. The organisers are expecting approximately 250 delegates to actively participate and make their contributions.
