WESTERN CAPE MEC FOR SOCIAL SERVICES AND POVERTY RELIEF, MR DAVID MALATSI, AND MR DIRK KOTZE OF ABSA HAND OVER R250 000 TO OPERATION HUNGER
The MEC for Social Services and Poverty Relief appreciates the commitment shown by Allpay, the company that was granted the contract by the department of Social Services to help with the distribution of social pensions.
This is one way Allpay had indicated beyond all doubt that they are committed to making a difference in the lives of all women in the Western Cape.
The cheque of R250 000 was handed over to Operation Hunger of the Western Cape who will use the money to empower women as far as Dysselsdorp, Chris Hani, Spandaw and Green Park informal settlements in the Northern Suburbs, Elandsbaai in the West Coast, De Doorns in the Hex River will benefit from the project too. The 250 000 is going to help these women and their communities with food security and opportunities for income generation through the cultivation of vegetable gardens and bakeries.
These women, the MEC said, "are women who have been negatively affected by the phasing out of the State Maintenance grant with effect from 1 April 2001. This grant is therefore an opportunity to fund the initiatives of Operation Hunger and these community women by bringing relief to them."
Allpay also confirmed that, at the MEC's request, they have already placed an order for 24 wheelchairs which will be given to the elderly who are infirm and unable to walk to their pension payout points.
They have also confirmed a pledge of a further 2100 chairs that will be donated to areas where people have to collect their pensions in the Western Cape.
