STATEMENT ON THE OUTCOME OF THE DISCIPLINARY ENQUIRY INTO THE FATAL INCIDENT IN WHICH A PATIENT FELL FROM AN AMBULANCE NEAR TINTSWALO HOSPITAL

A formal disciplinary hearing into the tragic death of Ms Regina Masia (28) of Green Valley village in Bushbuckridge took place on Friday 18 May 2001. The hearing involved a senior professional nurse, Ms Stella Khubayi, and the driver of the ambulance, Mr Curtis Mthethwa, both of whom were charged with gross dereliction of duty. You would recall that the charges arose from an incident in which the pregnant Ms Masia was left alone in the back of the ambulance, from which she fell whilst being transported to Tintswalo hospital in the early hours of 7 May 2001.

We would like to announce that the enquiry has found Ms Stella Khubayi guilty, and she will therefore remain in suspension until the finalisation of the relevant processes. An appropriate sanction will be communicated to her within 5 working days (as from today), after which she may lodge an appeal with the MEC for Health and Welfare if she so desires.

Mr Mthethwa was found not guilty and will forthwith assume his responsibilities in the hospital.
