STATEMENT BY SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE ON CANNABIS ERADICATION OPERATION IN THE ROYAL KINGDOM OF SWAZILAND
A severe blow was dealt to the drug trade through a joint operation between the South African Police Service and the Royal Swaziland Police wherein cannabis fields were sprayed.
Assistance was rendered to the Royal Swaziland Police by the South African Police Service, in the eradication of cannabis fields. The operation involved members from SAPS SANAB, SAPS Air Wing and Swaziland Anti-Drug Units and was held from 6 May 2001 and continued until the 18 May 2001.
About 108 hectares were sprayed in the Royal Kingdom of Swaziland. The following areas were covered in the operation:
*Southern region of Swaziland
*Nkomati River Valley
Two-ton bags containing cannabis were also confiscated and this resulted into the arrest of six (6) persons.
In total, cannabis valued at R7,56 million was destroyed. As Detective Management we strongly believe that this exercise will have far reaching results in that it will to a greater extend assist in reducing the levels of drug trafficking not only between Swaziland and South Africa but other neighbouring countries would also benefit from this operation.
