JOINT LAUNCH OF TAXI INDUSTRY HIV/AIDS AWARENESS VENTURE BY KWAZULU-NATAL TRANSPORT AND HEALTH DEPARTMENTS

The KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Health MECs, Mr S'bu Ndebele and Dr Zweli Mkhize, are to launch a Taxi Industry HIV/AIDS Awareness Joint Venture.

The project, which is a partnership between the two departments, will be launched:

Date: 22 May 2001
Venue: Empangeni Taxi Lot 63 Rank, Near OK Bazaars
Time: 09h00 - 12h00

The project is aimed at the taxi industry which include taxi associations, taxi drivers, hawkers in the ranks and commuters.

After an intensive analysis on the impact of this epidemic within the public transport, these two Departments agreed that the taxi industry has not been adequately exposed to AIDS Awareness. Taxi owners, drivers and hawkers spend most of their time in taxi ranks therefore are left out in community and business HIV/AIDS initiatives.

The project is designed in a form of industrial theatre where actors, musicians and dancers will be performing while educating people about the dangers of HIV/AIDS in taxi ranks. Members of the media are invited. Please note photo opportunity.
