STATEMENT ON THE VISIT BY THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL MISSION ON THE GREAT LAKES TO SOUTH AFRICA
President Thabo Mbeki will hold discussions on the peace process in the DRC and Burundi with a delegation of the United Nations Security Council Mission on Thursday 17 May in Pretoria. The UN delegation, led by French Ambassador Levitte is expected to arrive in South Africa on Wednesday 16 May.
The delegation will also hold further discussions with former Presidents Nelson Mandela and Keitumile Masire.
The meetings will make an assessment of progress made in such key areas as the withdrawal of foreign troops, the maintenance of cease-fire agreements and progress achieved thus far towards the inter-Congolese dialogue, with a view to making recommendations to the UN Security Council on ways and means of strengthening and consolidating the current peace initiatives in the Great Lakes.
