PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON CORRECTIONAL SERVICES INSPECTS OVERCROWDED JUVENILE CENTRES

Members of the Correctional Services Portfolio Committee will tomorrow, Friday (30 March 2001) at 10h00 conduct an inspection of three juvenile centres in the Western Cape, which are said to be overcrowded, and their conditions deteriorating.

A spokesperson for the committee, MP, Dennis Bloem said committee members would first inspect the Ottery Youth Centre where 800 juveniles are held under very bad conditions.

Mr. Bloem said the centre had no proper facilities while toilets were blocked.

The committee will also inspect the Constantia Boys and Girls youth centres, which are said to be overcrowded.

Mr. Bloem said there was a very explosive and serious situation in juvenile centres in the Western Cape Province. The committee will table a report with recommendations to Parliament after their visit.
