MINISTER OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, DR. ZOLA SKWEYIYA, LEAVES FOR NEW YORK TO ADDRESS THE UNITED NATIONS COMMISSION ON SOCIAL PROTECTION
The Minister of Social Development, Dr. Zola Skweyiya leaves for New York (USA) this weekend to address the 39th Session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development of which he is currently Chairperson.
In his address, the Minister will focus on the challenges South Africa and the Southern African Region faces in relation to social protection as and outline measures being undertaken by the government to address these challenges.
''We will emphasise the need for comprehensive social protection that is based on respect and promotion of human rights, protects the most vulnerable members of the society and enhances programmes for poverty alleviation and social integration", the Minister said." This 39th UN Session is significant and timely. It comes at a time when the country is reviewing the entire social security system. We want to develop comprehensive policy and systems that is responsive to the needs of the poor and most vulnerable. We hope to learn a lot from the other countries' experiences and also share with them our own experiences", Dr Skweyiya said. This 39th UN Session will take place from the 13-23rd February 2000 and will be attended by representatives from all the over the world. It is being held under the theme "Enhancing Social Protection and Reducing Vulnerability in a Globalising World."
