PIGEON OLYMPIAD

The Premier of the Western Cape, Mr Gerald Morkel, officially opens the first ever World Pigeon Olympiad to be held in South Africa in Cape Town tomorrow. More than 5 000 overseas visitors from more than 30 countries are in the Western Cape for the event.

The opening at 10 am at the Good Hope Centre, will be preceded by some colourful entertainment by the Cape Coons starting at 9h30. Some of the worlds finest racing birds will be on show inside the centre in special lofts built at a cost of more than R100 000. Top racing pigeons sell for as much as R1 million. Exhibitors from all over the world will have the latest equipment related to the multi billion rand pigeon fancier industry on show.

Mr Morkel, who has played a major role in bringing the Olympiad to Cape Town, says the Olympiad will generate a tremendous financial turnover for the Western Cape. With more than 5 000 international pigeon fanciers, flight costs alone amounted to millions while accommodation, rental venues for events, transport income, sightseeing, ancillary tours, food and drinks, shopping, income from related exhibitions, has generated millions more for the Province.

"This is all income which creates opportunities and jobs for many people. The Western Cape has the infrastructure to host many more such international events. It is the support of the people of this province for such events which will determine the agenda for the future. South Africa, and more specifically Cape Town, was fortunate in having been granted this first Pigeon Olympiad of the 21st century."

The Premier appealed to the people of Cape Town to come and see the exhibition and the birds at the Good Hope Centre tomorrow morning. "It will be an unforgettable experience."

Note to all editors: The exhibition will provide some excellent photo opportunities as well as good copy. TV-crews are advised to set up around 9h00 am. All Enquiries to Jan Nel (cell) 083 300 5196)

Issued by the Office of the Premier, Western Cape, 18 January 2001
