STATEMENT ON THE PASSING AWAY OF FORMER FOREIGN MINISTER ALFRED NZO

The Department of Foreign Affairs has learned with great shock and sadness about the passing away of former Foreign Minister Alfred Nzo this afternoon.

Mr Nzo served as post-apartheid South Africa's first Foreign Minister in former President Mandela's Cabinet from 1994 until he retired from Government in 1999. During his term, Mr Nzo served the interest of South Africa in international affairs with great distinction, dedication and commitment. In his role as former Secretary General of the ANC, Mr Nzo played a pivotal role with others in the eventual attainment of democracy in South Africa. He will be remembered for his contribution and leadership in overseeing South Africa's readmission into the international arena. Mr Nzo was at the forefront of the successful efforts of the international community which resulted din the indefinite extension of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. He will also be remembered for his leadership during important international events such as UNCTAC IX, the XII Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement and various United Nations General Assembly and OAU Ministerial Sessions. The former Minister also played a central role in the successful conclusion of the Ottawa Treaty on the banning of landmines.

The Department of Foreign Affairs expresses its sincerest condolences to Mrs Nzo and her family and wishes them strength during this difficult period.
