DEPUTY PRESIDENT JACOB ZUMA WILL ATTEND THE FOURTH LANGKAWI INTERNATIONAL DIALOGUE (LID)
The Deputy President will attend the Fourth Langkawi International Dialogue on "Smart Partnership for Global Co-operative Prosperity" from 25-28 July 1999, Langkawi, Malaysia.
The dialogue will represent the continuing evolution of the Smart Partnership philosophy, and has adopted as its theme "Managing Economic Recovery For Shared Prosperity. The Smart Partnership Approach". Topics to be discussed will include:
* The Economic Crisis (The triggering factors, the contagion effect and the influence of multilateral initiatives),
* Actions for Recovery (The Impact of policy responses, recovery plans based on orthodox and unorthodox approaches and measures for safeguarding national socio-economic agenda),
* Creating a Stable Future (the role of business in strengthening economic fundamentals, building confidence and increasing productivity).
Three previous Dialogues on the theme of Smart Partnership and its various aspects have been held since 1995 with the assistance and joint effort of the Commonwealth Partnership for Technology Management Ltd (CPTM) and the Malaysian Industry Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT). These were very successful interactive Dialogues among the highest level political and governmental leaders and leading public and private sector personalities.
The LID '99 seeks to build on the great success of previous CPTM Dialogues to promote and support recovery from the international financial global turmoil and to promote global co-operative prosperity. Its objectives relate to the application of Smart Partnership philosophies which among other things:
* Develop person-to-person relationships and trust among people in the Commonwealth to build co-operative terms and a common vision.
* Strengthen networks and enhance working relationships among governments, the private sector and labour through Smart Partnership national hubs
Issued by: Office of the Presidency, 23 July 1999
