MEDIA RELEASE ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ON THE INCORPORATION OF COLLEGES OF EDUCATION INTO HIGHER EDUCATION - 14 DECEMBER 1998
The Department of Education (DoE) was considering incorporating colleges of education into the Higher Education sector.
This follows a meeting of Heads of Departments Committee (HEDCOM) held on October 19, at which the DoE was requested to identify key issues regarding the incorporation of colleges into Higher Education.
At the same meeting, the national education department was requested to initiate bilateral discussions with Provincial Education Departments regarding this matter, and to bring firm proposals to HEDCOM.
It was suggested that the Northern Cape provincial education department should be treated as a special case and the Higher Education Branch of the DoE should contact that province directly.
A further presentation on this matter will be made to HEDCOM.
HEDCOM consists of heads of education of the nine provinces.
