CABINET MEETING - 20 AUGUST 1997
The Cabinet held its regular fortnightly meeting in Tuynhuys, Cape Town, discussing in the main reports from the Cabinet Committees.
The Cabinet received a report that there has been considerable illegal fishing within South Africa's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around the Prince Edward Islands that is likely to severely reduce fish resources, and approved a joint operation by the Departments of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, of Foreign Affairs, and of Justice and the South African National Defence Force to enforce the Country's Exclusive Economic Zone around the Prince Edward Islands.
The Cabinet approved the persons proposed by the Minister of Trade and Industry to serve on the Board of Ntsika Enterprise Promotion Agency.
The Cabinet received a report on the review of the Provinces undertaken by the Department for Public Service and Administration and approved the release of the Provincial Review Report (a press briefing has been organised by the Department/Ministry).
The Cabinet received a report that the Namibian Government has requested that records of the Administrator-General of South West Africa; the Birth, Marriage and Death Registers of SWA; and the records of the Bantu Affairs Commissioner-General, Oshakati be returned to the National Archives of Namibia and approved that these records be returned.
The Cabinet received a report on the White Paper on a Population Policy for South Africa and approved its publication.
The Cabinet also considered a number of Bills and international Conventions and approved that those listed below be submitted to Parliament during the current session:
- Convention Establishing the International Organisation of Legal Metrology;
- 1907 convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes;
- United Nations Conventions on the Law of the Sea;
- Witness Protection Bill, 1997;
- Sheriffs Amendment Bill, 1997;
- Qualification of Legal Practitioners Amendment Bill, 1997;
- Magistrates Amendment Bill, 1997;
- Criminal Procedure Amendment Bill, 1997;
- Debt-Collectors Bill, 1997;
- Attorneys Amendment Bill, 1997;
- Not-for-Profit Amendment Bill, 1997.
