The Cabinet held its regular fortnightly meeting today at the Union Buildings, Pretoria. The Cabinet considered in the main reports from the Cabinet Committees.

The Cabinet concurred that the President appoint Mr Justice H J O van Heerden as Deputy Chief Justice and Justice P N Langa as Deputy President of the Constitutional Court.

The Cabinet also concurred that the President appoint Mr Justice J C Kriegler and Ms B N Bam as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, respectively, of the Electoral Commission.

The Cabinet considered and approved persons

- proposed by the Minister of Finance to serve on the Board of the Development Bank of Southern Africa;

- proposed by the Minister of Post and Telecommunications to fill vacancies on the Board of the South African Post Office Limited;

- proposed by the Minister of Trade and Industry to serve as CEO of Ntsika Enterprise Promotion Agency.

The Cabinet considered and approved the White Paper on Higher Education - A Programme for Higher Education Transformation.

The Cabinet considered the following pieces of legislation and conventions and approved their submission to Parliament during the current session:

1. 1993 Amendments to the Convention on the International Maritime Organisation;
2. Convention to Combat Desertification in those Countries experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification;
3. Livestock Improvement Amendment Bill, 1997;
4. Lome IV Convention and the Georgetown Agreement.
