DEPUTY PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI TO RECEIVE GOOD GOVERNANCE AWARD, 17 April 1997

The US based Corporate Council on Africa has chosen Deputy President Thabo Mbeki as the recipient of its prestigious Good Governance award.

Deputy President Mbeki will receive the award at a gala function to be held on Monday 21 April 1997 in Washington DC. Other recipients of the Good Governance Award include President Joaquim Chissano (Mozambique), President Henri Konan Bedie (Cote d'Ivoire), Prime Minister Kintu Musiko (Uganda) and Deputy Prime Minister Kassu Ilala (Ethiopia).

The awards ceremony forms part of the largest-ever US business summit on Africa. Deputy President Mbeki will join more than 150 African Ministers and business leaders and US business leaders to discuss the theme "Attracting Capital to Africa."

The Corporate Council on Africa is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation of American corporations and individuals that are committed to developing the African private sector and strengthening the commercial relationship between the United States and Africa.

Founding members of the Corporate Council On Africa include the Ambassador Andrew Young, the Mobil Corporation, Coca-Cola Company, General Motors Corporation, AT&T and H.J. Heinz Company.

While in Washington DC Deputy President Mbeki will address the National Press Club on "Developments in Southern Africa" and the International Olympic Committee's Country Ambassadors forum on South Africa's 2004 Olympic Bid.

He will also meet with Vice President Al Gore, Secretary of State Mrs Madeleine Albright, Ms Maxine Waters (Chairperson of the Congressional Black Caucus), Mr James Wolfenson (President: World Bank), Mr Jay Pritzker (Chair: Hyatt Hotel Group) and Mr Edward Whitacre (Chair: South Western Bell Corporation).

Deputy President Mbeki departs South Africa for Washington DC on Saturday 19 April 1997 and is expected to return on Wednesday 23 April 1997.
