MINISTRY OF LAND AFFAIRS STATEMENT: DESIGNATION OF LAND IN THE DISTRICT OF KIRKWOOD IN EASTERN CAPE FOR THE PURPOSE OF SETTLEMENT, 27 March 1996
In terms of Section 2(1)(c) of the Provision of Certain Land for Settlement Act of 1993, Minister of Land Affairs Derek Hanekom designated Portion 227 (portion of Portion 216) of Strathsomers Estate Nr 42, commonly known as Brandwag, and Remainder of Portion 275 (portion of Portion 216) of Strathsomers Estate Nr 42, commonly known as Dreymore, as well as Portion 63 of Strathsomers Estate Nr 42, situated in the district of Kirkwood, Division Uitenhage and Province of the Eastern Cape, for the purposes of settlement.
The following conditions were imposed for the use of the designated land;
The Nomzamo Stock Farmers Association Trust will hold the land for the benefit of 94 identified families;
The Trust will ensure that the carrying capacity of live stock units is not exceeded;
The Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act of 1983 will apply to the utilisation of the land.
The case is an excellent example of many NGO's, Governmental Departments and other people working together in helping disadvantaged communities to become land owners. A symbolic transfer of the land to the community was already done on 24 February 1996, when Minister Hanekom visited Kirkwood.
Further information regarding this case may be obtained from Mr A van Rensburg at (041) 563-565/6 or (041) 560-195 (fax)
