An official notice concerning a land claim by the Makuleke tribe on the northern section of the Kruger National Park and adjacent land, is to be published in the Government Gazette on 8 August 1996.

According to the official notice the Regional Land Claims Commissioner for the Northern Province, Ms Emma Mashinini, invites any party who has an interest in the land being claimed, to submit comments or information within 30 days from the publication of the notice.

The land being claimed by the Makuleke tribe is the entire section of the Kruger National Park situated between the Limpopo and the Levuvhu and Mutale rivers and the western boundary of the Park, the Pafuri area situated in the former Released Area 26 in the Sibasa district, in extent 19 842 hectares, the area formerly known as Makulekas Location 1 MU in the district of Sibasa, the section of the Madimbo corridor between the western boundary of the Kruger National Park and the western boundary of what is regarded as the traditional land of the Makuleke tribe, and the section of the former Venda between the western boundary of the Kruger National Park and the western boundary of the traditional land of the Makuleke tribe that lies to the north of the Mutale river.

Restitution of Land Rights Act, 1994 that an official notice in the Government Gazette is there to invite inputs and comment from any other party on the particular claim. It is a step in the process of investigation, negotiation and mediation regarding the claim.
