MINISTRY OF MINERAL AND ENERGY AFFAIRS: MR RF BOTHA ON REDUCTION OF FUEL PRICES, 28 June 1996

I have today confirmed the calculation of the new fuel prices in terms of the agreed fuel price mechanism, which will take effect from Wednesday 3 July 1996. Lower international and crude oil and product prices will result in a drop of 1(one) cent per litre in the prices of both petrol and diesel.

I have also decided to terminate the Equalisation Fund levy of 4,0 cents per litre on Illuminating Paraffin. This together with the 2(2) cents per litre reduction in the Illuminating Paraffin price in terms of the agreed fuel price mechanism, means that the Illuminating Paraffin will be reduced by 6 cents per litre from Wednesday 3 July 1996.

I am particularly glad the price of Illuminating Paraffin can be reduced. This is made possible both by lower oil prices as well as by the termination of the contribution which Illuminating Paraffin has been making until now to the Equalisation Fund.
