STATEMENT BY PROFESSOR SIBUSISO BENGU, MINISTER OF EDUCATION, SEPTEMBER 20, 1995
This is to announce that I have received the report of Advocate Johan Gautschi, SC on his investigation into allegations relating to the administration and the conduct of certain officials of the Vaal Triangle Technikon.
During his investigation, Advocate Gautschi received help and co-operation from specialists and all interested parties. There was also an open invitation to all interested parties to submit their concerns.
In the report, certain shortcomings and irregularities were identified and recommendations for disciplinary action made.
Meanwhile, the Council of the Vaal Triangle Technikon has been reconstituted. With due respect for the autonomy of the Technikon, I have decided to refer the report to the Council for follow-up work on the findings in the report. The powers to deal with these matters are, in any case, vested in the Council.
I appreciate that the news media have an interest in the report and its findings. However, I also consider it fair that the Council should have an opportunity to study the report before it is made available to the media.
The bulk of the report makes it expensive to provide copies to all members of the media. Therefore, I have decided that media reporters may study the report from 12:00 onwards on Tuesday, September 26, 1995, in the office of Mr Corrie Rademeyer, Communications Director of the Department of Education.
Issued on behalf of the Minister of Education.
