MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL COMMISSIONER OF THE SA POLICE SERVICE: COMMISSIONER GEORGE FIVAZ, PRETORIA, 1995-09-29

(Statement re murder of Police officials)

The Management Forum (MF) of the SA Police Service yesterday, after observing a minute's silence for the Impendle Four, condemned in the harshest possible terms the ongoing killing of Police officials.

The cold-blooded execution of these four Policemen was also described by the MF as a severe setback for Police/Community relations in KwaZulu-Natal.

The MF thanked the Government of National Unity after Cabinet yesterday also condemned Police killings and also thanked all political parties and community leaders who also condemned the Impendle attack.

The formulation of a comprehensive strategy to counter attacks on police officials was also discussed at today's meeting and it was decided that a number of interim steps would immediately receive attention.

These included:

The inclusion of Police labour unions in this planning process.
The development and implementation of alert systems and situational analysis, based on accurate intelligence, to sensitise Police officials to specific dangers in any given area.
The immediate activation and tasking of SAPS intelligence structures to provide the necessary information for alert systems.
Providing the necessary physical backup and support for Police officials in the field.
The acceleration of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) training for SAPS members.

It is envisaged that these steps will be integrated into a broader strategy to counter attacks on Police officials.

The MF again reiterated that the entire community should be mobilised against the killing of Police officials.
