The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Police, Ms Makhotso Sotyu and the National Commissioner of Police, General Riah Phiyega will brief the media on the Operation Duty Calls National Festive Season Crime-Fighting campaign in Pretoria on Tuesday.

On the occasion of the launch of the campaign in October last year, Minister Mthethwa called upon all South Africans to partner with the police in fighting the scourge of crime. The operations were aimed at, amongst others, increasing high police visibility at various cities, townships including tourist destinations especially along the coastal cities.

Our approach and operations were focused around aggravated robberies, including house and business robberies, cash-in-transit, as well as ATM bombings.

Police also focused on social crime-prevention operations dealing with contact crimes like murder, rape and crimes against women, children and the elderly. In addition there were concerted operations around alcohol and drug abuse. During the briefing, the Minister will share various statistics around the number of arrests, search and seizures, recovered stolen vehicles, etc.

Details of the media briefing are as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 15 January 2013
