Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the death in police custody of Musa Muzi Khumalo, Pretoria Moot

3 Dec 2012

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the death of Mr Musa Muzi Khumalo at the Pretoria Moot South African Police Service (SAPS) cells. The death occurred on 1 December 2012 in the afternoon.

It is alleged that on 1 December 2012 at about 15h15 a suspect by the name of Musa Muzi Khumalo (aka) Brigadier Khumalo was arrested and detained at Pretoria Moot SAPS by the Head Office Task Team that was established to track him down. The deceased was wanted for murder and impersonating a police officer. He had allegedly passed himself off as a Brigadier attached to the Hawks in the Durban Policing area.

The deceased was allegedly found hanging from his cell window when the cells were visited. He is alleged to have hanged himself with torn strips from his blanket.

The IPID was informed and our investigators attended the scene and started an investigation in terms of its mandate as set out in the IPID Act, No 1 of 2012. This mandate enjoins the IPID to investigate all deaths in police custody and deaths as a result of police action.

No arrests have been made. The investigation continues.
