Although a number of examinations remain in the 2012 National Senior Certificate (NSC), the writing of today’s English paper will signify the end of the 2012 NSC for the majority of our candidates.

I know that many of our matriculants are extremely relieved to have completed writing their examinations, there are, however, others who still have subjects to write. These candidates must remain focused. The end is not far away.

Examinations are scheduled to end on the 28^th of November, with Religion Studies, Dance Studies and Electrical Technology.

Many of our candidates will begin celebrating the end of their examinations at parties around the province, with some of them travelling to areas like Plettenberg Bay and Hermanus for “Matric Rage” parties.

I would like to make a special appeal to all our candidates to celebrate responsibly. They must also exercise extreme caution while driving, be vigilant of other vehicles and pedestrians, and ensure that they buckle up and have a driver who is not under the influence of alcohol.

This weekend’s accident involving three candidates from Mondale HS was a stark reminder of how dangerous our roads can be. The family and friends of these learners are in our thoughts and prayers.

I have consulted with my cabinet colleague for Community Safety MEC Dan Plato, and in anticipation of the annual influx of students and matriculants to the Plettenberg region, the Provincial Traffic Services has entered into a partnership with the Bitou Municipal Traffic services.

Their operational plan for this period includes the following:  

• traffic officers will be on duty on a 24/7 basis to enforce Traffic and other Law Enforcement By-laws and will be present at identified activity venues;
• weekend alcohol blitzes will take place (vehicle and driver fitness tests will be conducted  including alcohol screening); and
• visible policing patrols on the N2  will be sustained.

Their activities will include the distribution of disposable breathalysers and the promotion of road safety awareness. There will also be 24/7 traffic policing across the rest of the province, with a zero tolerance approach to ensure road safety.

Candidates are also reminded that they must be available to write up the 9th of December for any eventuality that might occur until the end of the examination process.
