Minister Fikile Mbalula to award prizes to Mascot competition winner

23 Nov 2012

The Minister of Sport and Recreation (SRSA) Fikile Mbalula will award prizes to the winner and runners-up of the SRSA Mascot competition.

The Department of Sport and Recreation, together with the Department of Basic Education, embarked on a countrywide competition involving schools where learners had to create a mascot for the former.

Among the entries entered, three mascots were chosen and South Africans voted for the best mascot, which will also be used as the mascot for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that the country will be hosting early next year.

The mascot chosen to represent the games is Takuma which was announced during the AFCON final draw in Durban.

Takuma will be used in future departmental campaigns; it will serve as a tool to promote good sportsmanship.

The designers of the three mascots and their schools will be awarded prizes during the ceremony to be held as follows:
Date: Tuesday, 27 November 2012
Time: 11h00
