Minister Jeff Radebe to amend regulations to cater for families

29 Oct 2012

Minister of Justice Jeff Radebe has instructed the state law advisers to amend the regulations governing the Marikana Commission of Inquiry, to ensure that the state makes arrangements to assist representatives of the deceased victims of the tragic incidents to attend and to remain in attendance for the duration of the Inquiry or for such time as they wish to remain in attendance.

The Department has liaised with the Commission this morning to convey its intention to submit the proposed amendment to the President before the end of business day today.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Jeff Radebe regrets any confusion and misconception that may have been created by the decision taken by the Department this past Saturday.  Government has the interests of the families of victims at heart hence that we are working tirelessly to salvage the situation. It should also be noted that the interests of the families are safeguarded by the seasoned legal representatives currently participating in the inquiry which is underway.
