Announcement of South Africa’s Young Innovator of the Year
17 Oct 2012 The Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will attend the HIP2B² 3M innovation challenge finals at which the country’s Young Innovator of the Year will be announced. The much awaited announcement is the culmination of a six-month challenge involving Grade 10 learners from quintile 1, 2 and 3 schools in the Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal regions.

Learners were invited to enter, in teams of two, their own innovations. They were tasked with identifying a real problem that affected them, their family or community. This could range from how to simplify everyday chores to how to stay safe, by applying science and maths solutions to the problem.
Backed by the Department of Education, the Innovation Challenge is the brainchild of HIP2B², the non-profit youth organisation founded in 2002 to promote the study of maths, science and technology-related subjects as a means to develop entrepreneurial skills and analytical thinking, along with its valued partner, the innovative multinational technology company, 3M.
