25 Feb 2010

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has commended the taxi industry for calling off its strike planned for today (25 February 2010), in protest against the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Johannesburg."We want to commend the taxi industry for calling off its planned strike today (25 February 2010) against the Bus Rapid Transit system and resuming normal operations.

"Last night, the Director-General of the Department of Transport, Mr George Mahlalela, was in negotiations with the taxi industry. Later today, the Director-General and I will also be meeting with the industry. As government, we remain committed to implementing the BRT system in partnership with all stakeholders, especially the taxi industry.

"The interest of the commuter remains paramount and therefore we will do everything possible to ensure the provision of safe, reliable, affordable and efficient public transport,” said the Minister.
