28 Sep 2012

The Department of Transport’s annual Transport Month Campaign is commemorated during the month of October. This year, 2012, the theme for the campaign is, “Working together to provide a safe and reliable transport system”

Transport Minister, Honourable Dikobe Ben Martins will officially launch the 2012 Campaign on Monday, 1 October at Bolani Road in Emndeni, Soweto.

The Minister will be joined by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, the MEC for Transport in Gauteng Mr Ismail Vadi, MECs for Roads and Transport, Safety and Liaison and Public Works from other provinces and senior Transport officials as well as various other members of the Transport sector and the media.

The details of the event are as follows:
Date: Monday, 1 October 2012
Venue: Bolani Road, Emndeni Township in Soweto (close to Jabulani Mall)
Time: 10h00 for 10h30

In line with the theme, among others, Minister Martins is expected to address and highlight issues in relation to:

  • road safety;
  • efficient and reliable public transport;
  • job creation;
  • infrastructure development and improvement, and
  • skills development.

The October Transport Month (OTM) Campaign was officially declared in 2005 during the Transport Lekgotla.

It is used to raise awareness on the important role of transport in the economy, to solicit participation from civil society and business in providing a safer, more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system.

The OTM campaign is used to engage in initiative showcasing progress achieved in various transport programmes and projects.  It is used to promote short and long-term transport plans of the DoT, Provinces, Public Entities & Metros (incl. flagship projects).

Through the OTM campaign, the Department highlights the role and successes of all stakeholders in creating safe modes of transport and contributions towards socio-economic development innovations.

The OTM campaign also creates a platform to mobilise public and private sector participation in transport projects aimed at developing the country’s economy and for sustainable job creation.
