Mineral Resources Committee will hand over R3.2 million to the community

31 Aug 2012

The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources will hand over the R3.2 million owed to the Schmidtsdrift community in the Northern Cape by the New Diamond Corporation (Pty) Ltd.

The Committee conducted an oversight visit to Kimberley and surrounding areas from 22 to 26 November 2010. They met with mining companies and the communities living near the mines, including the Schmidtsdrift community. However, the Committee could not meet with the New Diamond Corporation because the mine was for sale and said to be non-operational.

According to the communities, the mine owed them R3.2 million in royalties. The Portfolio Committee investigated the matter and conducted a follow-up visit to Schmidtsdrift on 3 and 4 June 2011. They met with the Provincial Legislature and the communities to assist the communities in accessing the R3.2 million owed to them.

Details of the event:
Venue: Schmidtsdrift Community Hall
Date: 1 September 2012
Time: 10h00
