Department of Roads and Public Works celebrating Madiba's legacy in Port Elizabeth

30 Jul 2012

Former President Nelson Mandela’s vision of celebrating his birthday by doing something for needy communities has been taken on with gusto by the department.

To mark Madiba’s 94th birthday and Mandela Month, Roads and Public Works MEC, Ms Thandiswa Marawu and departmental staff members are renovating a number of community facilities in the Maletwai, Buffalo City Metropolitan and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipal areas.

The initiative will move to the Motherwell Health Centre in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday, 31 July, where partitioning was erected in the waiting area. Two old ambulance parking bays were also enclosed with aluminium shop-front type partitioning to serve as a facility where physiotherapists can help people with walking and other physical disabilities.

The work at the health centre included the provision of a new screed, the closing off of the existing floor drain, the installation of a new window for cross ventilation and the provision of a new floor drain for washing ambulances outside the facility. Finally, a sign board was also installed at the clinic.

At Kwazakhele High School, the team will clear a site and remove trees for the erection of a new fence donated by a private donor. Later, they will cut at Immanuel Haven (the former Thembelihle and Siyalinga Places of Safety).
