President Zuma to sssess service delivery in KZN

20 Jul 2012

President Jacob Zuma will visit KwaZulu-Natal to assess progress made on service delivery in the uMzimkhulu Local Municipality.

President Zuma is conducting Siyahlola monitoring visits across the country, focusing on the five priorities and 12 outcomes of government. He has undertaken monitoring visits on education, health, infrastructure and rural development. The visit to uMzimkhulu is a response to a complaint from a member of the community on The Presidency's Facebook Page, Mr Bongokuhle Miya.

Mr Miya complained about flooding in the streets, sewerage overflow and animals roaming the streets. The President mentioned the details of Mr Miya's posting in his State of the Nation Address, 2011. A Presidential Monitoring Team has worked closely with officials from the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, Sisonke District and uMzimkhulu Local Municipality to address the three challenges raised by Mr Miya.

This visit further gives the President an opportunity to assess progress made by the province and the municipality in the overall implementation of Outcome Nine as anchored in the following outputs:

  1. implementation of a differentiated approach to municipal financing, planning and support
  2. improving access to basic services
  3. implementation of the Community Works Programme
  4. actions supportive to the human settlement outcome
  5. deepening democracy through a refined Ward Committee Model
  6. administrative and financial capability
  7. a single window of coordination.

The President will be accompanied by a number of ministers, and will conduct site visits to planned projects, projects under construction and completed projects. The highlight of the visit will be a community engagement session, where the President
will interact with communities to give and receive feedback on government's delivery on its priorities.

The President and his entourage will also interact with the political leadership of the provincial, district and local government.
