South African government consultation with religious leaders from NICSA and NRSDA on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project

13 Jul 2012

Consultations on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) continued on Friday, 13 July 2012 when the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the GFIP led by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, met with religious leaders representing the National Interfaith Council of SA (NICSA) and the National Religious Association for Social Development (NRSDA) at the Union Buildings.

The Deputy President was accompanied by the Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation and the Minister of Finance, the Deputy Ministers of Finance and Transport as well as the Directors-General of the departments represented in the Inter-Ministerial Committee. The religious delegation was led by Rev. Ray McCauley and Rev. Desmond Lambrechts representing NICSA and the NRSDA respectively.

The consultations are continuing and more meetings between government, key stakeholders and interested parties are planned for the coming weeks.

In the meeting, the Deputy President explained that the Inter-Ministerial Committee will brief Cabinet on the issues raised during the consultation process with a view to finding an amicable solution to the current challenges concerning the GFIP. Cabinet will consider all issues raised by the stakeholders in deciding on the way forward on the project.

The GFIP was conceived as part of a strategy to solve the problem of severe congestion on the Gauteng freeways.
