1 Jun 2010

MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison Ghishma Barry will officially launch an Alcohol Evidence Centre in Straundale, Port Elizabeth on Friday, 4 June 2010.

This is a joint initiative with South African Breweries, South African Police Force, Provincial Traffic, CPF Provincial Board and Buffalo City Traffic in ensuring that the law around drink-driving is upheld in the interest of the people of the Eastern Cape

This venture is also in line with the Provincial Crime Prevention Strategy (PCPS) that seeks to improve the moral fibre of the people of the Eastern Cape. With its emphasis placed on good governance and building of strong household and communities through an integrated crime prevention strategy.

The PCPS stats also show that alcohol is strongly linked to violent crimes including those against women and children and is also a major contributor to untimely deaths.

The establishment of alcohol evidence centres will look to ensure that the following are achieved:
* No more inefficient and ineffective blood testing
* Significant reduction in processing time
* Significant increase in arrest
* No more lost or damaged evidence
* Plus minus 85 percent of those charged admit guilt
* Plus minus 95 percent of cases contested in court are won.

These centres will also be established in East London and Mthatha in the near future.

The venue will be as follows:
Date: 4 June 2010
Venue: Straundale Traffic Department (Port Elizabeth)
