Gauteng winter matric classes start next week
28 Jun 2012The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE’s) winter school matric programme will start next week from 2 to 5 July and 9 to 13 July 2012. There are only 35 teaching days still left before the matric examinations start in October.
To prepare learners for the exams, the GDE invites all grade 12 learners in underperforming schools to attend classes so that they improve their marks and their chances of passing matric. We will run similar classes during the September holidays after the trial examinations, as well as matric preparation camps in October.
The classes are part of the Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP) which offers extra classes to schools that performed below 80% in the 2011 matric exams.
Gauteng Education MEC Ms Barbara Creecy will visit Berea Park High School on Monday, 2 July 2012 to encourage and motivate learners. She will be at the school at 10am and members of the media are invited to join the MEC.
The programme has been successful in past months resulting in learners improving their marks in the exams. It focuses on those topics that learners normally struggle with in an exam. It focuses on subjects which include Maths, Maths Literacy, Life Sciences, Accounting, Geography, History, Physical Science, Business Studies, and English First Additional Language.
Expert tutors with a proven track record of good results in their schools are selected to participate in the programme. The department has deployed special monitoring teams to ensure that the programme runs effectively and that quality teaching and learning happens. Learners receive free lunch and in some areas transport assistance is provided to learners.
Parents are requested to ensure that learners attend these classes for these eight days during the school holidays. Learners are encouraged to establish study groups of four to five friends so that they can work through the material in preparation for the final examination.
