Learners to undertake educational tour to universities
22 Jun 2012
As part of MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform Zoleka Capa’s school adoption programme, the MEC will send school children and educators to an educational tour to two universities during winter holidays.
Honourable MEC had adopted nine (9) schools across the length and breadth of the province as a departmental contribution to the broader Eastern Cape School Improvement Programme.
At least 5 pupils and 1 Life Orientation teacher from each school will be afforded an opportunity to be exposed to the tertiary institutions when the Universities of Pretoria and Free State host the learners in a 4-day-tour starting on Monday.
Since the adoption, the MEC has visited them and donated agricultural implements including wheelbarrows, spades, forks, rakes and other implements for the greening of the school environment.
The department assigned 9 officials to the adopted school that profiled and made Strengths Weaknesses Threats Opportunities (SWOT) analysis for further interventions.
The department sourced donations from other stakeholders in a bid to deal with the challenges that included but not limited to infrastructure, electricity, sanitation, over-crowding, and shortage of books as well general situations of poverty and ill-health.
While the tour will be cover all career paths, the department hope that this intervention stands a good chance in stimulating further interest in the agriculture sector and can be useful in addressing the scarce and critical skills, especially in the fields of veterinary services and engineering.
The Honourable MEC will be with the school children in Bloemfontein on Monday to make them feel at home.
