Department restructures National Disability Machinery
13 Jun 2012 The Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities (DWCPD), Lulu Xingwana will host and deliver a keynote address at the second leg of the National Disability Machinery (NDM). The First meeting between the department and other government departments was held in May 2012.
This second session, which is a Disability Consultative Forum (DCF) meeting is between Government and the Disability sector and is led by the Deputy Minister, Ms Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu.
The meeting will look into the strengthening and restructuring of the NDM which was approved in 2007. The objectives of the machinery are to facilitate the domestication of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Millennium Development Goals and the Africa Decade of Persons with Disabilities. Among other things, the meeting will reflect on the objectives of the NDM in line with the mandate of the department.
Issues for discussion include the role and mandate of the department and how the department collaborates with the disability sector in fulfilment of its mandate.
In addition, the meeting will reflect on expectations with regards to the purpose, roles and responsibilities of the National Disability Machinery. This will include clarifying institutional arrangements responsible for driving the national disability agenda across all three spheres of society in South Africa.
